Mint Of The United States At San Francisco Type II Ingots Part III

After presenting the Type II registry in a previous post and subsequently studying it, I went back to as many original sources as possible and focused on the written descriptions more so than the photographs for any information I might be able to add. This exercise resulted in quite a few updates to the list as I was able to discover lot numbers that I had not picked up on previously as well as three additional examples that are listed with reverse date stamping.

The sheared plate examples track nicely through the three known dates by numerical sequence organization. The fineness of .99975 is consistent throughout. None include lot numbering and the extra numbers on the obverse remain a mystery; they are listed in the registry as "x mk".

In the cast examples, I was able to find quite a few lot numbers within the written descriptions that I have included in the updated list. While the fineness of .99975 remains constant throughout the cast group above, I have yet to figure out the conflict between lot numbers and numerical sequencing. typically lot numbers are together in groups but here we see individual lots spread throughout. Lot 164 is constant through the examples known to contain the reverse round 1956 hallmark, but is also on the very first example, #155. Lots 1, 2 and 178 are spread in between.

I am undertaking some new endeavors, reaching out for information that I hope continues to progress my work on accurate dating and chronological organization of Mint Of The United States At San Francisco ingots. Much more to come.
